Picnic Day

Events & Ideas in the Northern Territory

What is Picnic Day?

A Unique Northern Territory Tradition

Picnic Day is a public holiday celebrated only in the Northern Territory of Australia. Held annually on the first Monday in August, it offers locals and visitors a much-welcomed long weekend to relax, socialise, and enjoy the Territory's laid-back lifestyle.

While the day is widely embraced for its social and recreational opportunities, its origins are deeply tied to the Territory's early rail and mining history.

The History of Picnic Day

From Railway Workers to a Territory-Wide Tradition

The roots of Picnic Day can be traced back to the late 1800s, when railway workers from the North Australia Railway would organise an annual picnic at Adelaide River. It was a rare day off from the harsh working conditions, giving workers a chance to unwind with food, drinks, games and camaraderie.

By the 1940s, the event had evolved into an official public holiday across the Northern Territory. Though the railway no longer operates, the tradition of gathering with friends, family and community continues to thrive.
